History of Aberargie Distillery
The Aberargie Distillery is a young establishment steeped in whisky-making history. Founded in 2017, it marks the return of the Morrison family to the distilling scene. Stanley P. Morrison, a whisky broker, owned Bowmore in the 1960s, and his business acumen laid the foundation for Morrison Bowmore, now under the ownership of Beam Suntory. This new venture, the Aberargie Distillery, signifies a continuation of the family’s passion for Scotch whisky.
From Liqueurs to Lowland Malt
The Morrison family, along with the Mackay family, ventured into the world of liqueurs in 2005 by acquiring the Scottish Liqueur Centre. This partnership, later named Morrison & Mackay, focused on liqueurs like Bruadar and Columba Cream.
However, their ambitions extended beyond liqueurs. In 2014, they established the Carn Mor range of blended and bottled Scotch whiskies and revived the Old Perth brand. This renewed interest in whisky production paved the way for the Aberargie Distillery.
A Modern Take on Tradition
Located on the Morrison family’s 300-acre farm near Perth, Aberargie Distillery operates as a “barley to bottle” establishment. This means they control the entire whisky-making process, from growing their own barley to bottling the finished product.
The distillery straddles the border between the Lowlands and Highlands regions, and their whisky reflects this unique location. They primarily use Golden Promise barley, a heritage variety not often used by modern distilleries, and incorporate occasional peated malt runs, offering a twist on the classic Lowland style.
A Look to the Future
As a young distillery, Aberargie hasn’t yet released its own matured whisky. However, with their focus on quality ingredients and traditional methods, whisky enthusiasts eagerly await their inaugural bottlings. The distillery represents a continuation of the Morrison family legacy and a potential revival of classic Lowland whisky styles.
