Annandale Distillery
History of Annandale Distillery

Annandale Distillery, located in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, was originally founded in 1836 by George Donald. Donald established the distillery in the heart of Scotland’s Lowland whisky-producing region, and it quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality single malt whisky. However, despite its early success, the distillery faced numerous challenges and eventually ceased production in 1918.

Revival and Modern Era

The distillery lay dormant for nearly a century until it was purchased in 2007 by David Thomson and Teresa Church. The new owners embarked on an ambitious restoration project to bring Annandale Distillery back to life. After extensive renovations and modernizations, the distillery resumed production in 2014, marking a new chapter in its storied history.

Types of Whisky Offered

Annandale Distillery produces two distinct types of single malt whisky:

  • Man O’ Words: Named after the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, this unpeated whisky is known for its smooth, sweet, and fruity profile.
  • Man O’ Sword: This peated variant pays homage to the legendary Scottish warrior Robert the Bruce, offering a smoky, robust flavor profile that appeals to lovers of traditional peated whisky.

Flask & Barrel Review of Annandale Distillery

I recently visited Annandale Distillery, and let me tell you, it was an incredible experience! As a whiskey collector who has toured many distilleries, this one truly stood out. Here’s why I’m giving it a solid 4.7 out of 5.

First off, the history of Annandale Distillery is fascinating. Originally founded in 1836, it has been beautifully restored after being dormant for almost a century. Walking through the distillery, you can feel the blend of old-world charm and modern craftsmanship.

The restoration work is impressive, and it really brings the place to life.

The guided tour was excellent. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate, explaining every step of the whisky-making process in a way that was both informative and engaging. From the malting floor to the copper stills, and finally the aging warehouse, we got to see it all up close.

I particularly enjoyed learning about the differences between their peated and unpeated whiskies, Man O’ Sword and Man O’ Words.

The highlight for me was the tasting session at the end of the tour. We sampled both Man O’ Words and Man O’ Sword, and each one was outstanding in its own right. The Man O’ Sword, with its rich, smoky flavor, was my personal favorite.

The tasting room was cozy and provided the perfect atmosphere to savor these fine whiskies.

The visitor center and café were great too. After the tour, I enjoyed a delicious snack and coffee at The Maltings Coffee Shop. The gift shop had a fantastic selection of whiskies and branded merchandise, so I couldn’t resist picking up a few bottles to add to my collection.

The only reason I’m not giving a perfect score is that I wished the tour was a bit longer. I was so engrossed in the experience that I didn’t want it to end! But honestly, that’s a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things.
