Founding and Early Years
Aultmore Distillery, established in 1895 by Alexander Edward, stands in the Speyside region of Scotland, known for its clear worts, long fermentations, and small stills that contribute to its distinctive character. The distillery’s name, meaning ‘big burn’ in Gaelic, hints at its water source, the Auchinderran burn. Acquisition and Expansion
John Dewar & Sons acquired Aultmore in 1923 for £20,000, marking the beginning of its integration into Dewar’s extensive portfolio of Scotch whiskies. This acquisition underscored Aultmore’s value as a blending malt, so much so that Bacardi, upon purchasing Dewar’s from Diageo, insisted Aultmore be part of the deal.
The distillery saw significant refurbishments in the 1970s, which included the demolition of the original buildings, showcasing its transition into a modern era while retaining its essence through the character of its single malts.
The Modern Era
Aultmore has remained relatively under the radar as a single malt, often dubbed ‘the Buckie Road’ by locals after the route on which it’s located. Its malt, however, has been a crucial component of Dewar’s blends.
It wasn’t until 2014 that Aultmore started gaining recognition as a single malt brand with the release of official bottlings, including age statements of 12, 25, and 30 years, thereby revealing its character to a broader audience.
The distillery has also embraced modernisation, with upgrades to its control systems and a shift to a seven-day production schedule.

Today, Aultmore continues to be a prized element of the Dewar blends, with Bacardi’s ownership ensuring its legacy endures.
