History of Braeval Distillery

Establishment and Early Years

Braeval Distillery, initially known as Braes of Glenlivet, was founded in the early 1970s, marking its commencement in a period of whisky industry expansion. The distillery was constructed by Chivas Brothers Ltd, a subsidiary of Seagram Co Ltd, between 1973 and 1974, to supply malt whisky for the Chivas Regal blend. Located in the Speyside region, Braeval is distinguished by its high altitude, making it one of Scotland’s highest distilleries, a trait it shares with Dalwhinnie.

Expansion and Development

The distillery began its operations with a modern approach, being one of the first in Scotland to automate the distillation process and to house all of its operations within a single, open-plan space. Despite its modernity, the distillery features a traditional pagoda roof, although it has never engaged in malting on site. Initially, the distillery operated with fewer stills, but expanded its capacity by adding two extra stills in 1975, followed by another in 1978, bringing the total to six stills—two large wash stills and four smaller spirit stills. This expansion was aimed at increasing production to meet the growing demand for the Chivas blends.

Ownership Changes and Mothballing

In 2001, the distillery experienced a significant change when Seagram’s Scotch whisky division was acquired by Pernod Ricard, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Braeval. The transition to new ownership saw the distillery being mothballed in 2002, a state that lasted for six years. This period of dormancy was not uncommon in the whisky industry, reflecting broader market conditions and strategic decisions by distillery owners.

Reopening and Current Status

The distillery was brought back to life in 2008 under Pernod Ricard’s stewardship, resuming its contribution to the Scotch whisky industry. Today, Braeval operates at full production, utilizing its six stills to produce a Speyside single malt that is known for its light and floral character. However, its single malt expressions are rare, with the majority of its production being used in blended Scotch whiskies.

Name Change

To avoid confusion with its more famous neighbour, The Glenlivet, the distillery changed its name from Braes of Glenlivet to Braeval in 1994. This rebranding helped to distinguish it within the crowded Speyside region and allowed it to develop its own identity in the Scotch whisky market.
