History of Calumet Farm

Founding and Early Years

Calumet Farm’s storied history began in 1924 when William Monroe Wright, a successful entrepreneur and owner of the Calumet Baking Powder Company, established the farm on a picturesque pasture in Lexington, Kentucky. Initially developed for breeding and racing Standardbred horses, the farm’s focus shifted towards Thoroughbred racing after Wright’s death in 1933, under the guidance of his son, Warren Wright.

Rise to Dominance

The farm’s ascent in the horse racing world was marked by strategic investments in bloodstock and the hiring of famed horse trainer Ben A. Jones. This period saw Calumet Farm producing two Triple Crown winners, eight Kentucky Derby winners, and eight Preakness winners, firmly establishing its dominance in Thoroughbred racing.

A Legacy Cemented

Throughout the mid-20th century, Calumet Farm’s success continued, highlighted by the achievements of legendary horses like Whirlaway and Citation. The farm’s influence extended beyond the racetrack, with its distinctive “devil” red and blue racing silks becoming a symbol of racing excellence.

Challenges and Rebirth

The latter half of the 20th century brought challenges, including the deaths of key figures and a decline in racing success. However, the farm’s fortunes were revived in the 1990s when businessman Henryk de Kwiatkowski purchased and restored it. The Calumet Investment Group’s acquisition in 2012 marked a new chapter, with the farm returning to prominence in Thoroughbred racing and launching Calumet Farm Bourbon.

Current Status and Future Outlook

Today, Calumet Farm continues to evolve, with a focus on breeding, racing, and the successful Calumet Farm Bourbon brand. Under the management of Eddie Kane, the farm aims to build on its rich legacy and remain a leading name in Thoroughbred racing.
