History of Catskill Provisions Distillery

History of Catskill Provisions Distillery

Catskill Provisions Distillery stands as a testament to the power of passion, innovation, and commitment to sustainability.

Founded by Claire M. Marin, the distillery has carved a unique niche in the spirits industry, offering a range of products that are as unique in flavor as they are in their creation story.

In this piece, we delve into the history of Catskill Provisions, exploring its origins, the journey of its founder, and the exceptional range of whiskey offerings that have garnered a loyal following.

The Journey from Publishing to Beekeeping

Claire M. Marin’s journey to founding Catskill Provisions is nothing short of inspiring. With a successful career in the corporate world as a national magazine publisher, Marin found herself at a crossroads, searching for fulfilment beyond the glossy pages of magazines.

Her solace came in the form of beekeeping, a hobby she pursued in Long Eddy, NY, introduced to her by her life partner and co-founder, Cathy Leidersdorff. This hobby soon turned into a passion, providing Marin with a sense of purpose and connection to nature.

The Birth of Catskill Provisions

In 2010, Marin decided to take a leap of faith, leaving her corporate career behind to fully immerse herself in the world of beekeeping and, eventually, distilling.

Drawing upon the local natural resources of Upstate New York, she began experimenting with bourbon and rye, infusing them with her 100% raw wildflower honey. This led to the creation of the NY Honey Whiskey, a product that perfectly encapsulated the essence of Catskill Provisions.

Challenges and Triumphs

The journey was not without its challenges. Marin navigated the male-dominated spirits industry, facing skepticism and overcoming obstacles to bring her vision to life.

In 2017, with the support of Leidersdorff, she decided to go all in, fully committing to building Catskill Provisions into the thriving distillery it is today.

The distillery now offers a variety of spirits, including the popular Pollinator Vodka and the standout NY Honey Whiskey, all imbued with the signature touch of Catskill Provisions’ honey.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

Catskill Provisions is more than just a distillery; it is a community committed to sustainable practices, environmental stewardship, and supporting local economies.

A portion of sales is donated to environmental causes devoted to saving bees and other pollinators, reflecting the company’s dedication to the greater good.

The distillery continues to innovate, with Marin and Leidersdorff working on new and exciting offerings, including an amari trio featuring a black walnut Nocino, a crimson amaro, and a vermouth.

Flask & Barrel Review of Catskill Provisions Distillery

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Catskill Provisions Distillery, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience! As a bit of a whiskey collector and someone who’s been on more distillery tours than I can count, I’ve got a pretty good sense of what makes a visit worthwhile. Catskill Provisions? They’ve got it.

First off, the vibe of the place is just spot on. The Tasting Room is this warm, inviting space that makes you feel right at home from the moment you step in.

And with an extended patio outside, there’s plenty of room to kick back and relax. I’m all about a place that knows how to blend comfort with style, and they’ve nailed it.

Now, let’s talk drinks. Cody Houghton, the head bartender, is a bit of a wizard when it comes to crafting cocktails. He’s got this knack for putting a unique spin on the classics, all while using their award-winning spirits.

I tried a few different drinks, and each one was better than the last. It’s clear these folks know their stuff when it comes to making top-notch spirits.

The distillery tour itself was a highlight for me. Even though it’s a bit of a drive from the Tasting Room, it’s totally worth it. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at how they make their whiskey was fascinating, and it’s always cool to see the passion that goes into crafting each bottle.

Just a heads up, though – make sure to book your tour in advance. They don’t have a store on site at the distillery, so planning ahead is key.

I also appreciate how accommodating they are. Whether you’re rolling in with a big group or you’ve got your furry friend in tow, they’ve got you covered.

And if you’re looking to pick up some bottles outside of their regular hours, they’re open for tastings and shopping a few days a week.

The only reason I’m not giving this place a full 5 stars? Well, I’m a tough critic. But honestly, Catskill Provisions Distillery is doing everything right.

From the atmosphere to the drinks to the tour, it’s a whiskey lover’s dream. I’ll definitely be back, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a top-notch distillery experience.
