History of Copper Fox Distillery
The Copper Fox Distillery, founded in 2005 by Rick Wasmund, is renowned for its unique approach to whiskey production. Wasmund’s passion for the aroma of burning wood and his love for Scotch whisky, particularly the peaty kind, inspired him to create a distinctive American Single Malt Whisky.
His journey included an internship at Bowmore Distillery in Scotland, where he learned the traditional art of floor malting barley.
Copper Fox Distillery, located in Sperryville, Virginia, was the first in the U.S. to reintroduce a malt floor and kiln since Prohibition’s repeal.
It stands out for using locally sourced ingredients, including grains grown by a single farmer and 6-row Thoroughbred barley developed specifically for Copper Fox at Virginia Tech.
The distillery’s innovation lies in its use of local fruitwood in the kiln, replacing peat to smoke and dry the grain, and it’s the only one globally to mature whisky with toasted applewood.

The tour itself was super informative. You can tell these guys are passionate about what they do. They walked us through their process, from malting to distilling, and it was clear they put a lot of heart into their craft.
The setting is pretty great too. It’s not just about the whiskey; the ambiance of the place adds to the experience. It feels rustic and authentic, which is a nice change from some of the more commercial distilleries I’ve visited.
If I had to nitpick, I’d say the tasting room was a bit crowded, but honestly, that’s just a sign of how popular they are. And the staff managed it well, ensuring everyone got attention and a chance to try their amazing selection.
