History of Dailuaine Distillery

The Dailuaine Distillery, located in Charlestown-of-Aberlour, Strathspey, Scotland, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1852 by William Mackenzie. After Mackenzie’s death in 1865, his widow leased the distillery to James Fleming, a banker from Aberlour.

Together with Mackenzie’s son, they founded Mackenzie and Company. The distillery underwent significant changes over the years, including a renovation and expansion in 1884 and the formation of Dailuaine-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd. in 1891.

This was followed by a merger with Talisker Distillery Ltd. in 1898 to form Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd.

In 1899, the distillery was redesigned by Charles C. Doig, featuring a pagoda-like roof that became a standard design for Scottish distilleries. Tragedy struck in 1917 when a fire destroyed the pagoda-roof, leading to a temporary closure.

The distillery reopened three years later and was acquired by Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925. A major renovation in 1960 expanded the distillery from four to six stills. However, since 1983, the malt is no longer produced in-house.

The distillery’s history also includes the purchase of a new 0-4-0ST locomotive in 1939 from Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. Ltd., named after the distillery, to work the branch to the mainline at Carron. In 1987, Dailuaine was taken over by United Distillers (UD), a significant event in its history.
