History of Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery
The Aberfeldy Distillery, founded by the sons of John Dewar in 1896, began its pursuit of whisky perfection in 1898. Located in Highland Perthshire, near the village of Aberfeldy, it was chosen for its natural water source, The Pitilie Burn, and its convenient transport links.
The distillery, designed by Charles Doig, features a signature pagoda roof and was built as a homage to John Dewar’s birthplace, just three miles away in Dull. Aberfeldy Distillery is known for its logical design and efficient whisky production process.
Today, it continues the Dewar family’s legacy, producing whisky with a honeyed-richness, a characteristic of Aberfeldy’s single malt, which also forms the heart of Dewar’s blend.
The distillery’s processes, including long fermentation in larch washbacks and distillation in tall pot stills, contribute to the distinctive flavor of Aberfeldy whisky, now popular as a single malt and a key component of America’s best-selling Scotch whisky.

Flask & Barrel Review of Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery
Just got back from Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery and I gotta say, it was pretty impressive. I’ve been on my fair share of distillery tours, but this one stands out. I’m giving it a solid 4.7 out of 5.
First off, the location is stunning. Nestled in the heart of Scotland, the drive there was a treat in itself. When I arrived, the vibe was welcoming and the staff were super friendly. You can tell they’re passionate about what they do, which always makes a tour more enjoyable.
The tour kicked off with a deep dive into the history of Dewar’s. Their heritage exhibition is top-notch – it’s not just a bunch of old photos and text. They’ve got interactive elements and some really cool artifacts that paint a vivid picture of the Dewar’s legacy. For a whisky nerd like me, it was fascinating.
Now, the main event – the whisky itself. I’ve tasted a lot of whiskies in my time, and I have to say, Dewar’s has some seriously smooth drams. The tasting session was well-organized and informative. The guide was knowledgeable, not just rattling off scripted facts but really engaging with our group.
I also appreciated the variety of tours they offer. Whether you’re a casual fan or a hardcore collector, there’s something for everyone. I went for the Connoisseur Tour, and it did not disappoint. The selection of older, award-winning whiskies was a real treat.
The only thing stopping me from giving a full 5 stars? I guess I would’ve loved to see a bit more behind-the-scenes of the actual distilling process. But that’s just me being picky.
Overall, Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery is a must-visit for any whisky enthusiast. Great atmosphere, amazing whisky, and a team that clearly loves what they do. Highly recommend!
