History of Dry Fly Distilling

Dry Fly Distilling, founded by Don Poffenroth and a friend, began with a conversation while fishing in a Pacific Northwest river. This discussion about their appreciation for the region’s natural beauty and hand-crafted spirits led to the creation of Dry Fly Distilling. 

The distillery, which started in 2007, is committed to a farm-to-bottle approach, sourcing grains from family farms within 30 miles of its location. 

Dry Fly Distilling offers a range of products, including award-winning whiskies, vodka, and gin, known for their quality and connection to the local environment. 

Notably, Dry Fly Bourbon 101 was the first legal Bourbon made in Washington State, featuring corn from a local Hutterian Settlement and Triticale from a farmer named Mitch. This bourbon is aged in 53-gallon American Oak barrels for a minimum of three years. 

The distillery’s commitment to local sourcing and quality is evident in its products, which are available throughout the U.S. and internationally.

The setup is intimate enough to feel personal, yet professional enough to assure you that these folks know their whiskey.

As someone who’s been on countless distillery tours, I appreciated the unique insights Dry Fly offered. Their tour was informative without being overly technical – perfect for enthusiasts and newcomers alike. 

What really set it apart was the transparency they provide into their distilling process. It’s rare to see a distillery so open about their methods.

The Whiskey

The only thing keeping me from a perfect score is my personal taste; I found one or two whiskeys not exactly to my preference, but that’s more about individual taste than quality.
