History of Dry Fly Distilling

Dry Fly Distilling, founded by Don Poffenroth and a friend, began with a conversation while fishing in a Pacific Northwest river. This discussion about their appreciation for the region’s natural beauty and hand-crafted spirits led to the creation of Dry Fly Distilling.

The distillery, which started in 2007, is committed to a farm-to-bottle approach, sourcing grains from family farms within 30 miles of its location.

Dry Fly Distilling offers a range of products, including award-winning whiskies, vodka, and gin, known for their quality and connection to the local environment.

Notably, Dry Fly Bourbon 101 was the first legal Bourbon made in Washington State, featuring corn from a local Hutterian Settlement and Triticale from a farmer named Mitch. This bourbon is aged in 53-gallon American Oak barrels for a minimum of three years.

The distillery’s commitment to local sourcing and quality is evident in its products, which are available throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Innovative Whiskey Varieties

Dry Fly has made a mark with its unique whiskey offerings. They are known for their Straight Triticale, a rye-wheat hybrid aged in huckleberry port barrels, which reflects their innovative approach to distilling.

Additionally, they were one of the first craft distilleries to produce a legitimate 10-year-old Single Malt. Dry Fly was also the pioneer in the region for a 100% wheat whiskey, challenging traditional perceptions of this spirit’s flavour profile.

Impact on Craft Distilling

Beyond their products, Dry Fly has played a significant role in shaping the craft distilling business.

They have been instrumental in starting numerous craft distilleries since 2007, thereby contributing significantly to the growth and transparency of the industry.

This achievement underscores their commitment not only to their own success but also to the broader development of the craft-distilling community.

Flask & Barrel Review of Dry Fly Distilling

As a seasoned whiskey collector who has toured numerous distilleries, I’ve got to say my recent visit to Dry Fly Distilling was a standout experience, deserving a solid 4.7 out of 5. Here’s my take on it:

Ambiance and Setting

Stepping into Dry Fly Distilling, you’re immediately struck by the welcoming vibe. It’s not just a distillery; it’s a place where passion for craft spirits is palpable.

The setup is intimate enough to feel personal, yet professional enough to assure you that these folks know their whiskey.

The Tour

As someone who’s been on countless distillery tours, I appreciated the unique insights Dry Fly offered. Their tour was informative without being overly technical – perfect for enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

What really set it apart was the transparency they provide into their distilling process. It’s rare to see a distillery so open about their methods.

The Whiskey

Ah, the main event! Dry Fly’s whiskey selection is impressive. Their Straight Triticale whiskey, aged in huckleberry port barrels, was a delightful surprise. The balance of flavors here is top-notch, and you can tell there’s a lot of care put into each batch.

Their 10-year-old Single Malt is another testament to their craftsmanship – it’s rich, complex, and exactly what you’d hope for in a craft spirit.

Innovation and Impact

What I really respect about Dry Fly is their commitment to innovation and influence in the craft distilling world. They aren’t just making great whiskey; they’re pushing boundaries and shaping the industry.

Learning about their role in pioneering wheat whiskey in the region was particularly fascinating.

Overall Experience

From the ambiance to the tasting, everything at Dry Fly Distilling felt curated for a true whiskey lover.

The only thing keeping me from a perfect score is my personal taste; I found one or two whiskeys not exactly to my preference, but that’s more about individual taste than quality.
