History of Dufftown Distillery

Dufftown Distillery was established in 1895 by the Dufftown-Glenlivet Company, originally named the Dufftown-Glenlivet Distillery. Just two years into operation, in 1897, Mackenzie & Company acquired the distillery.

They managed it for the next forty years, marking the beginning of its long-standing influence in the whisky industry.

Expansion and Ownership Changes

The early 20th century saw significant changes when Arthur Bell and Sons purchased the distillery, integrating Dufftown single malt into their blends.

To meet increasing demand, Bell’s expanded the distillery in 1974 and again in 1979, significantly increasing its production capacity.

In 1985, United Distillers, now part of Diageo, acquired Dufftown, adding it to the portfolio of Scotland’s largest single malt whisky provider.

Whisky Production and Offerings at Dufftown Distillery

Dufftown Distillery stands out as one of the highest functioning distilleries in Scotland in terms of production.

It offers a range of whiskies, including the “Singleton of Dufftown” and the “Dufftown 15-year old” from Diageo’s Flora and Fauna range.

Historically, the distillery also produced official bottlings in the 1990s and a few independent bottlings.

Interestingly, only 3% of its single malt is marketed as such, with the majority contributing to Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd’s blends.

Dufftown Distillery Features

The distillery’s water source, Jock’s Well, has been a point of contention, historically disputed with the nearby Mortlach distillery.

Today, Dufftown boasts a production volume of 5.8 million liters of pure alcohol annually. Its maltings, initially peated and used from 1895 until 1968, are now sourced from Diageo-owned industrial sites.

The distillery also houses eight warehouses, storing nearly 100,000 bourbon barrels and sherry casks of malt whisky.
