About Durham Distillery

Durham Distillery is a craft spirits producer located in the historic city of Durham, close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The distillery was inspired by the Bourbon distilleries in the college towns of America’s East Coast and aimed to create high-quality spirits in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner.

The founders of Durham Distillery set out to reflect the unique duality of County Durham, which is known for its mix of bishopric and university prestige alongside a working-class, industrial heritage.

This blend of sophistication and industrial grit is captured in the distillery’s aesthetic, which features rich Palatine colors alongside materials like concrete and rusted steel.

The distillery sources its grain from neighboring Northumberland and North Yorkshire, and uses pure Durham spring water in its distillation process.

The botanicals for their gin, including elderflower and juniper, are sourced from the surrounding Durham hills and dales.

The distillery’s commitment to local ingredients and real craft is a testament to their dedication to quality and provenance.

Flask & Barrel Review of Durham Distillery

I’ve been on my fair share of distillery tours, but Durham Distillery really stands out. Right off the bat, the vibe of the place is a mix of old-school charm and modern chic, which is totally my jam.

The 90-minute tour kicked off with a bang – a crisp Gin and Tonic that was the perfect primer for what was to come.

As a whiskey collector, I’ve seen the gamut of distilleries, and I’ve got to say, the transparency here is refreshing. They’re not just about the show; they’re about the tell, too.

They walk you through the craft spirit-making process with such passion that you can’t help but be hooked on every word. And the choice of cocktail from their seasonal menu? Chef’s kiss! It’s clear these folks aren’t just riding the craft wave; they’re surfing it like pros.

The gin-making class was a highlight for me. It’s one thing to taste; it’s another to create. At £85.00, it’s a steal for the experience you get. And the cocktail class?

Let’s just say my home bar game is looking a lot stronger. For £35.00, learning to mix like a pro is worth every penny.

Now, I’m a whiskey guy through and through, but the way Durham Distillery embraces its local roots with Durham spring water and regional botanicals for their gin speaks volumes.

They’ve got this down-to-earth authenticity that’s as rare as a limited-edition single malt.

The only thing keeping this from a full 5/5 is that I’m holding out for their whiskey offerings. The tour teased my palate, and I’m eager to see if they can bring the same level of craftsmanship to whiskey as they do to their gin and cocktails.

Until then, it’s a solid 4.7 for me. If you’re in Durham, don’t walk – run to this distillery. Whether you’re a collector or a casual sipper, there’s something here that’ll catch your fancy.
