History of DYC Distillery

Nicomedes García, inspired by traditional Scottish whiskey-making methods, founded the first Spanish whiskey distillery in Segovia, his birth region. 

The Molino del Arco in Palazuelos de Eresma, chosen for its climate and water quality, was transformed into Destilerías y Crianza del Whiskey SA in 1958. DYC whiskey distillation began in 1959, quickly gaining popularity with its first million cases sold by 1963. 

The brand saw rapid expansion, tripling production by 1966 and continuously breaking sales records, even amidst the influx of imported whiskeys in the 1980s.

Significant milestones include the launch of DYC 8 in 1975, the modern Valverde del Majano bottling plant in 1984, and environmental certifications in 1999. 

DYC’s innovation continued with the introduction of DYC Pure Malt in 2007, the first single malt in its range, and energy cogeneration systems. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2009, DYC released a special single batch malt. 

The 2010s saw the launch of exclusive editions like DYC 15 and DYC Double Oak, and the Master Distillers Collection, starting with DYC 12 aged in Sherry barrels. 

DYC’s excellence was recognized with multiple awards, including the 2017 Sip Awards Gold Medal for DYC 12 and the Double Gold Medal in 2018 for DYC 15.

In recent years, DYC has continued to innovate and lead in the Spanish whiskey market, with initiatives like the Reforestation of the Eresma River slopes and the launch of DYC 20 in 2022, the most expensive Spanish whiskey ever auctioned. 

The distillery, still a leader in Spain, reopened its visitor center in 2021, marking over six decades of legacy and tribute to its founder, Nicomedes García.

Flask & Barrel Review of DYC Distillery

Just dropped by DYC Distillery and, wow, was it an experience! As a seasoned whiskey tour goer, this place really nailed it.

Set in beautiful Segovia, the distillery mixes old-world charm with some neat modern touches. The monthly tours add an exclusive vibe, making the whole visit feel special.

The tour was packed with fascinating insights into traditional whiskey crafting. DYC’s history is as rich as their whiskey, and believe me, I’ve heard quite a few distillery tales in my time.

The highlight? Tasting the DYC 20 Grand Masters. This whiskey is a masterpiece, complex and rich – a real treat for the taste buds.

Pairing this with a menu designed by Chef Samantha Vallejo-Nágera was genius. The food complemented the whiskey perfectly, elevating the whole experience.

However, the once-a-month opening and the five-hour duration might not suit everyone, which is why I’m knocking it down just a tad to 4.7/5.

The interactive visitor center and the option of a virtual tour are nice touches, catering to both in-person and online visitors.

Overall, DYC is a must-visit for whiskey enthusiasts. The blend of tradition, technology, and top-notch whiskey makes for a memorable experience.
