History of Edradour Distillery

The Edradour Distillery, nestled in Scotland, boasts a rich history intertwined with the evolution of Scotch whisky.

Founded in 1825 as a cooperative by local farmers, Edradour emerged during a time when whisky production, often illicit, was a common practice in the Highlands.

The distillery’s establishment followed the Excise Act of 1823, which made legal distilling more attractive by encouraging licensing and reducing duty on spirits.

Throughout its history, Edradour has been a story of survival and adaptation. From its early days of producing whisky in small pot stills to navigating through periods of illicit distilling and conflicts with Excise Officers, the distillery has witnessed the transformation of whisky from a local craft to a globally prized commodity.

Its journey includes a varied ownership history, ranging from the New York Mafia to large corporate entities, and finally returning to Scottish hands under Andrew Symington, Master of the Quaich.

 

 

Unique Features of Edradour Distillery

Edradour stands out for its traditional, handmade farm whisky and innovative single malts. It prides itself on being a small-scale producer, utilizing Scotland’s smallest traditional stills and maintaining a hands-on approach without reliance on computerized equipment.

This commitment to tradition is evident in its unique features, such as the use of a small Open Mash Tun over 110 years old, Oregon Pine Washbacks over 50 years old, and the last working Morton Refrigerator in the whisky industry for cooling wort.

Distilling at Edradour Distillery

Edradour’s process involves two copper stills and worm tubs, with the second distillation occurring in Scotland’s smallest traditional still.

The distillery also emphasizes sustainability, with the used barley grains, known as Draff, being repurposed as cattle feed by local farmers.

Edradour Distillery Tour Information and Experience

A note from the distillery: The distillery will remain closed for public in 2023 – this includes all tours, the distillery shop and the tasting bar. Due to a shortage of staff we will unfortunately not be able to welcome any visitors this year.
