History of Finger Lakes Distilling

Finger Lakes Distilling, a New York State Farm Distillery, was established in March 2007 and began its journey in the heart of the Finger Lakes wine and farm country.

The distillery, inspired by traditional Scottish whisky distilleries, features white walls, black trim, and an elegant pagoda roof. It started production in December 2008 with the installation of a Bavarian Holstein still.

The founders focused on using locally grown fruits and grains to create high-quality, handcrafted spirits. This commitment to local sourcing is evident in their diverse range of spirits, which includes award-winning products made from grapes, berries, rye, corn, apples, and other fruits and grains.

The distillery’s tasting room, which opened in July 2009, offers visitors a glimpse into the careful crafting of these spirits.

Milestones in Finger Lakes Distilling’s History

Significant milestones in the distillery’s history include the construction of a warehouse building in December 2011, the installation of a continuous still in April 2013, and the formation of the New York State Distillers Guild in February 2014, with Brian McKenzie elected as Vice President.

In September 2017, Finger Lakes Distilling became a founding member of the Empire Rye Association, further solidifying its commitment to quality and tradition in spirit production.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in September 2019, Finger Lakes Distilling released its first 10-year-old Single Malt, marking a decade of excellence in spirit production.

The distillery continues to innovate and uphold the traditions of fine spirit crafting, making it a notable and respected name in the industry.

Flask & Barrel Review of Finger Lakes Distilling

As a seasoned whiskey collector who’s been on more tours than I can count, I’ve got to say, Finger Lakes Distilling really stands out. I’d easily give it a 4.7 out of 5.

The moment you step in, you’re hit with this vibe that’s both modern and rooted in tradition. Their commitment to using local ingredients shines through in every sip.

The tour? Top-notch. It’s not just a walk-through; it feels like a deep dive into the art of distilling. And the staff? Super knowledgeable, and you can tell they’re passionate about what they do. It’s that kind of dedication that makes a difference.

Now, the whiskeys – oh boy, they’re something else! Each one has a unique character, smooth and rich. I especially loved their McKenzie Rye Whiskey. You can really taste the care put into crafting it.

Sure, it’s not perfect, but what is? The overall experience at Finger Lakes Distilling is just exceptional. It’s a must-visit for any spirit enthusiast, especially if you appreciate the craft behind a good whiskey. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
