George Dickel Distillery

History of George Dickel Distillery

The George Dickel Distillery, officially known as the Cascade Hollow Distilling Co., was founded in 1870 by George A. Dickel in Cascade Hollow, Tennessee. Dickel, a German immigrant, established the distillery with the aim of producing high-quality Tennessee whiskey, capitalizing on the region’s pure limestone spring water and ideal climate for whiskey production.

Prohibition and Revival

Like many distilleries in the United States, George Dickel’s operations were severely impacted by Prohibition, which lasted from 1920 to 1933. During this period, the distillery ceased production. However, after Prohibition ended, the distillery resumed operations and continued to build its reputation for producing premium Tennessee whiskey.

Production Techniques

George Dickel’s whiskey production is distinguished by its use of the Lincoln County Process, which involves filtering the whiskey through sugar maple charcoal before aging.

This process, also used by other Tennessee distilleries, imparts a unique smoothness and character to the whiskey. Additionally, George Dickel’s commitment to chill-filtering its whiskey prior to bottling sets it apart, further enhancing the smoothness and quality of the final product.

George Dickel Distillery offers a diverse range of whiskey products, including:

Flask & Barrel Review of George Dickel Distillery

I recently had the chance to visit the George Dickel Distillery in Cascade Hollow, Tennessee, and let me tell you, it was a fantastic experience! As a whiskey collector who’s toured my fair share of distilleries, I was excited to see what George Dickel had to offer. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t disappointed.

The tour kicked off at the visitor center, where the friendly staff greeted us and gave a brief history of the distillery and its founder, George A. Dickel. The guide was super knowledgeable and made the whole story come alive, which was a nice touch.

Walking through the distillery grounds, you can feel the history in the air. The mash house and distillation room were fascinating, with the guide explaining every step of the process. Seeing those copper stills up close was awesome, and I learned a ton about their unique chill-filtering process and the Lincoln County Process they use for their whiskey.

Now, the highlight for any whiskey lover – the tasting session. We got to try a range of George Dickel’s offerings, including the classic No. 8 and No. 12, along with the Barrel Select.

Each whiskey had its own distinct flavor, and the guide provided some great tasting notes to help us appreciate the nuances. My personal favorite was the No. 12, with its rich, smooth taste and hints of caramel and vanilla. It was a real treat!

The distillery is located in a beautiful part of Tennessee, and the setting really adds to the experience. Cascade Hollow is picturesque, and it makes the tour feel even more special. The whole place has a laid-back, welcoming vibe that’s perfect for relaxing and enjoying some quality whiskey.

After the tour, we hit up the gift shop. They had a great selection of George Dickel products, from bottles to branded glassware and other cool souvenirs. I couldn’t resist picking up a bottle of Barrel Select to add to my collection.

All in all, I’d give the George Dickel Distillery a solid 4.7 out of 5. The tour was informative and fun, the whiskey was top-notch, and the setting was just beautiful. The only reason it’s not a perfect score is that I would have loved a little more time in the barrel houses, but that’s a minor gripe. If you’re a whiskey enthusiast or just looking for a great day out, I highly recommend checking out George Dickel Distillery. You won’t regret it!
