About Girvan Distillery

 

The Girvan Distillery, located in South Ayrshire, Scotland, is a significant grain whisky distillery owned by William Grant & Sons.

Founded in 1963, the distillery was established following a dispute between the Grant family and the Distillers Company Limited (DCL). Under the guidance of Charles Grant Gordon, the distillery was constructed and began producing alcohol within just nine months of breaking ground.

Girvan Distillery is known for its energy efficiency and is one of the largest whisky production facilities in Scotland. It plays a crucial role in producing whisky for Grant’s and Clan MacGregor blended whiskies.

In 1985, the distillery introduced its export single grain whisky, Black Barrel, to markets in Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

An interesting aspect of the distillery’s history is the operation of the Ladyburn single malt distillery on the same site from 1965 until 1975.

This facility was specifically used to produce malts for Grant’s blended whisky but was closed and demolished a year later.

In addition to whisky, Girvan Distillery is also the production site for Hendrick’s Gin, known for its unique infusion of cucumber and Bulgarian rose, alongside traditional juniper.

This gin gained acclaim when it won the 2003 Wall Street Journal award for the “Best All Around Gin.”

The distillery has a significant production capacity of 115 million litres per annum and utilizes a multi-pressure distillation system.

The grain used is primarily wheat, with a malted barley percentage of 8.5%. The water for the distillation process is sourced from the River Girvan.
