History of Glen Spey Distillery
The Glen Spey Distillery, nestled in Rothes, Moray in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside whisky-producing area, has a storied history dating back to its founding in 1878 by James Stuart & Co.
Originally named ‘Mill of Rothes’, it began as an oatmeal mill before transitioning into whisky production. The distillery was sold to the Gilbey company of London in 1887 and underwent significant changes over the years, including a merger with United Wine Traders in 1962 to form International Distillers and Vintners, and an expansion in 1970 from two to four stills.
Production at Glen Spey Distillery
Glen Spey is distinctive for its use of ‘purifiers’ in the distillation process, which contribute to a lighter spirit by increasing reflux within the pot stills.
While the distillery has released only a few official bottlings, the majority of its production is integral to the popular J&B blends. Now part of Diageo plc, Glen Spey continues to contribute to the rich tapestry of Scotch whisky with its unique production methods and limited but valued single malt offerings.
