History of Glenora Distillery

Founding and Vision

The distillery was founded by Bruce Jardine, who envisioned creating a single malt whisky distillery in Cape Breton, an area reminiscent of Scotland.

His dream began to materialize in the early 1800s with the influx of Scottish immigrants to the island.

Scottish Influence and Construction

Jardine’s vision was bolstered by the expertise of Bowmore Distillers from Scotland, who assisted in production training and provided authentic Scottish copper pot stills and a mash tun. The construction of the distillery was completed in 1990.

Water Source and Ingredients

A crucial element in whisky production, the water for Glenora Distillery, comes from MacLellan’s Brook, known for its purity.

The distillery prides itself on using only three ingredients for its first whisky, Glen Breton Rare: barley, yeast, and water.

First Production and Expansion

The initial production in 1990 yielded 20 barrels of North America’s first single malt whisky. In 1994, the distillery, along with its maturing whisky, was acquired by new owners with Scottish ancestry and Cape Breton roots.

Milestones and Special Editions

The first bottling of Glen Breton Rare occurred in November 2000, with a limited supply featuring a blue label.

The distillery celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015 with a special edition Glen Breton 25 Year Silver Anniversary Package and Bruce Jardine Special Reserve 25 Year Old.

The 30th anniversary in 2020 was marked with a limited edition 30-year-old whisky named Triginta.

Types of Whiskies from Glenora Distillery

Glenora Distillery offers various whiskies, including the renowned Glen Breton Rare, special anniversary editions, and the Triginta.

Each whisky reflects the distillery’s commitment to traditional methods and the unique terroir of Cape Breton.

Flask & Barrel Review of Glenora Distillery

I’ve been on my fair share of distillery tours, being a whiskey collector and all, but my recent visit to Glenora Distillery was something else.

First off, the location in Nova Scotia is just breathtaking. It’s like stepping into a little piece of Scotland, which, for a whisky enthusiast like me, is pretty cool.

The tour itself was top-notch. It runs daily, and I didn’t need a reservation, which was handy. Lasting about 20 minutes, it was short but sweet. The guide was knowledgeable and had a real passion for whisky, which made the experience more engaging.

And, of course, the tasting at the end was the cherry on top – getting to try their signature Glen Breton Rare was a treat.

What really set Glenora apart for me was the VIP Backstage Pass Tour. It’s a bit pricier, but as someone who’s seen a lot of distilleries, this felt special.

The behind-the-scenes look at the Whisky Warehouse and the chance to draw a sample straight from the barrel was a unique experience I haven’t found elsewhere. Plus, the private tasting session was a great way to dive deeper into their whisky varieties.

The only reason I’m not going full 5/5 is the price of the VIP experience – it’s a bit steep, but then again, it’s a unique offering that serious collectors will appreciate.

In short, Glenora Distillery is a must-visit for whisky lovers. It combines great tours, fantastic whisky, and stunning scenery. Definitely a highlight in my book of distillery tours!
