History of Ian MacLeod Distillers

Ian Macleod Distillers, established as Ian Macleod & Company Ltd in 1933 by Leonard Russell Senior, has a rich history in the whisky industry. The Russell family acquired the company in 1963, marking a significant turning point.

They expanded their portfolio by acquiring the Isle of Skye blended Scotch whisky in 1963, King Robert range of spirits in 1968, and London Hill Gin in 1990. The company’s name changed to Ian Macleod Distillers Ltd in 2003 following the acquisition of Glengoyne Distillery and the Langs brands.

Key milestones include the launch of Smokehead Islay Malt in 2006, the acquisition of Tamdhu Distillery in 2011, and Spencerfield Spirits in 2016, which included Edinburgh Gin. In 2017, they acquired the cherished Rosebank Distillery, known for its sought-after single malts.

The company also launched an exclusive Edinburgh Gin edition in partnership with Phoebe Waller-Bridge in 2021, supporting the arts.

Ian Macleod Distillers offers various whiskies, including blended Scotch, Speyside Single Malt, Lowland Single Malt, and other spirits like gin and rum. Their commitment to quality and tradition, combined with innovative approaches, has made them a significant player in the spirits industry.

Flask & Barrel Review of Ian MacLeod Distillers

As a seasoned whiskey collector who’s seen my fair share of distilleries, I’ve got to say my visit to Ian MacLeod Distillers was a standout experience. You could feel the passion and expertise they pour into their craft.

First off, the tour of the Edinburgh Gin Distillery was a real eye-opener. It wasn’t just about gin; it was a deep dive into the art of distilling. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, making the whole experience feel personal. They even had safety measures in place, which made me feel more at ease.

Then there was the Glengoyne Distillery. This place is a whiskey lover’s dream! The Malt Master experience was particularly memorable. It was fascinating to get that in-depth insight into their single malt whiskies and their history. Plus, buying some exclusive bottles from their shop was a bonus for my collection.

But here’s the thing – while the tours were top-notch, there were a couple of minor downsides. The group sizes felt limited, primarily if you’re used to more extensive tours. And sometimes, the safety measures, although necessary, took a bit away from the whole ‘immersive’ aspect.

Overall, I’d give Ian MacLeod Distillers a solid 4.7 out of 5. Their dedication to quality and detail is evident; for any whiskey aficionado, it’s a must-visit. Sure, there’s room for improvement, but isn’t there always? This place should be on your radar if you’re into your spirits.
