History of Invergordon Distillery

Invergordon Distillery, nestled in the Scottish Highlands, boasts a relatively young history compared to its Speyside counterparts. Yet, it has carved a significant niche for itself within the world of Scotch whisky. Let’s delve into the story of this modern giant.

Birth of a Grain Giant (1959):

Unlike many traditional malt whisky distilleries, Invergordon wasn’t born from a single founder’s vision. In 1959, Invergordon Distillers Ltd. was established with the specific purpose of building a large-scale grain whisky production facility. Grain whisky, produced using continuous column stills, is known for its lighter and more neutral character compared to malt whisky.

This focus on grain whisky reflected a growing demand for blended Scotch whiskies, which often combine grain whisky with single malts to achieve a specific flavor profile.

Expansion and Innovation (1960s – 1970s):

Construction of the distillery began in 1960, and operations commenced the following year. Initially equipped with just one tall column still, the distillery quickly expanded. By 1963, two more stills were added, significantly increasing production capacity.

Invergordon’s ambition wasn’t limited to grain whisky. In the 1960s and 70s, the company embarked on a period of expansion, acquiring the Tamnavulin-Glenlivet and Bruichladdich malt whisky distilleries, showcasing their interest in a broader portfolio.

The Whyte & Mackay Era (1990s – Present):

Invergordon Distillers Ltd. changed hands several times throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Finally, in 1993, Whyte & Mackay, the Indian-owned whisky giant, acquired the company.

Under Whyte & Mackay’s ownership, Invergordon has continued to focus on grain whisky production, remaining one of the largest producers in Scotland.

Invergordon Today:

While Invergordon doesn’t bottle a single malt whisky under its own name, its spirit is a vital component in many popular blended Scotch whiskies. The distillery also produces a single grain Scotch whisky, “The Invergordon,” which caters to a specific market segment and has received positive reviews for its smooth and approachable character.

Invergordon remains a significant player in the Scotch whisky industry, a testament to its innovative spirit and focus on quality grain whisky production.
