Hayden, it was named in honor of his grandfather, Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a well-known distiller of his time. The brand was sold to the Wathen family in 1899, becoming part of the American Medicinal Spirits Company and later the National Distillers Group.
This group was known for producing medicinal whiskey during Prohibition. In 1987, National Distillers Group sold their spirits business to the Fortune Brands holding company, which later became Beam Inc., currently part of Beam Suntory.
