History of Jos. A. Magnus & Co. Distillery
The story begins in mid-19th century America, during the Civil War, when young Joseph, after the death of his father in battle, took on the responsibility of caring for his siblings.
He followed in his father’s footsteps as a merchant and eventually built a successful liquor empire based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Joseph Magnus was known for his insistence on quality and honourable business practices.
His Murray Hill Club Whiskey, renowned for its flavour and bouquet, gained widespread acclaim.
In 1918, with the advent of National Prohibition, Magnus ceased production and sales of his whiskey. His legacy faded into legend until nearly a century later, when a great-grandson discovered a 122-year-old bottle of Murray Hill Club Whiskey.
This discovery led to the assembly of a team of experts, including Dave Scheurich, Nancy Fraley, and Richard Wolf, to analyse and potentially reproduce the whiskey.
Today, Magnus Master Blender, Nancy Fraley, uses the same blending and finishing techniques employed by Joseph Magnus over 100 years ago, finishing 12-year-old bourbon in a triple cask process using Oloroso Sherry, Pedro Ximénez, and Cognac casks, closely replicating the original Joseph Magnus Bourbon.
This history highlights Joseph Magnus’s commitment to quality and innovation in whiskey production, his adaptability in the face of changing times, and the revival of his legacy through the discovery and reproduction of his original whiskey formula.
