History of Kanosuke Distillery

Kanosuke Distillery, a prominent name in the world of Japanese whisky, was established in 2017. It was founded by Komasa Jyozo Co., Ltd., a company with a rich heritage in the production of traditional Japanese spirits, particularly shochu. The distillery is situated in the picturesque region of Kagoshima, known for its pristine natural environment, which contributes to the unique characteristics of Kanosuke’s whiskies.

Vision and Philosophy

Kanosuke Distillery was built on the vision of creating high-quality whiskies that combine traditional Japanese craftsmanship with innovative techniques. The founder aimed to develop a brand that could stand alongside the renowned whisky producers of Japan and the world, showcasing the potential of Kagoshima as a whisky-producing region.

Types of Whisky Offered

Kanosuke Distillery offers a range of whiskies that reflect their commitment to quality and innovation. The core lineup includes:

  • Single Malt Whisky: Kanosuke’s single malt whiskies are crafted using malted barley and aged in various types of casks, including American white oak, sherry, and wine casks. These whiskies are known for their rich and complex flavors, with notes of fruit, spice, and oak.
  • New Pot Whisky: This is an unaged expression that allows whisky enthusiasts to experience the raw, unrefined spirit straight from the still. It provides insight into the distillery’s production process and the potential of their aged products.

Production Techniques

Kanosuke Distillery employs traditional pot stills for distillation, ensuring that each batch of whisky retains the handcrafted quality that the brand is known for. The distillery uses pure, natural water sourced from the nearby mountains, which plays a crucial role in the whisky’s flavor profile. Additionally, the maturation process takes place in the unique climate of Kagoshima, which offers distinct temperature variations that influence the aging process.

Awards Won by Kanosuke Distillery

  • World Whiskies Awards (2022): In 2022, Kanosuke Distillery truly made a splash at the World Whiskies Awards. They secured a trifecta of awards in the Single Malt (No Age Statement) Japanese category, winning:
    • Category Winner

    • Silver Medal

This impressive performance highlights the distillery’s commitment to quality and its ability to create exceptional whiskies despite its young age.

  • Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition (2021): In 2021, Kanosuke’s “Limited New Born #3” earned the title of “Japanese Newmake Category Winner” at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition. Flask & Barrel Review of Kanosuke Distillery

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Kanosuke Distillery, and I have to say, it was a fantastic experience. As a whiskey collector who’s toured countless distilleries, Kanosuke stands out for a few reasons.

First off, the location is just breathtaking. Nestled along the coast in Kagoshima, Japan, the view alone is worth the trip. When you step into the distillery, you’re greeted by a blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern design. It’s a perfect balance that sets the tone for what’s to come.

The tour itself was both informative and engaging. Our guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable, walked us through the entire whiskey-making process. They explained everything from the unique three still system they use to the different types of barrels for aging. I’ve been to many distilleries, but the level of detail here was impressive without being overwhelming.

Now, let’s talk about the whiskey. We had a tasting session at the end of the tour, and wow, the flavors were amazing. The Kanosuke Single Malt, in particular, was a standout. It had a rich, smooth taste with hints of caramel and a slight smoky finish. Each sip was a delight, showcasing the distillery’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

One thing I really appreciated was the distillery’s focus on innovation while still honoring traditional methods. It’s clear they put a lot of thought and passion into their work, and it shows in the final product.

The only downside was that the tour felt a bit short. I was having such a good time that I wished it could’ve lasted longer. Also, their gift shop could use a bit more variety in souvenirs.

Overall, Kanosuke Distillery is a must-visit for any whiskey enthusiast. It offers a unique experience that beautifully combines Japanese culture with exceptional whiskey. I’m giving it a solid 4.7 out of 5. If you find yourself in Japan, don’t miss the chance to visit this gem of a distillery.
