History of Kiwi Spirit Distillery

The Origins of Kiwi Spirit Distillery

The Kiwi Spirit Distillery’s story is deeply rooted in New Zealand’s rich natural heritage. It all began 17,000 years ago with a natural phenomenon that would set the stage for the distillery’s future. As snow fell on New Zealand’s majestic mountains, it gradually formed the pure waters of ancient aquifers.

These waters, flowing through time, now feed Te Waikoropupū Springs, a key element in the distillery’s foundation, providing the pristine water crucial for their spirit production.

The Founding of the Distillery

The distillery was founded by Terry Knight, a visionary with a passion for quality and innovation. His journey in creating Kiwi Spirit Distillery was driven by a desire to harness the unique natural resources of Golden Bay.

With a dedication to using locally sourced ingredients, Terry laid the groundwork for a distillery that was as much a part of the local community as it was a producer of fine spirits.

The Evolution of Kiwi Spirit Distillery

Over the years, Kiwi Spirit Distillery has grown, both in size and in spirit. The 25-acre site, nestled in the heart of Golden Bay, is not only a distillery but also home to lush gardens and orchards.

These gardens are more than just scenic; they are a testament to the distillery’s commitment to using fresh, local ingredients, a philosophy that has been central to the distillery’s operations from the beginning.

The Team Behind the Scenes

Kiwi Spirit Distillery is not just the brainchild of Terry Knight; it’s a collaborative effort. Sue Bensemann, an award-winning distiller, brings her expertise to the table, ensuring each bottle of spirit meets the highest standards of quality.

Jeremy Clark, managing the Cellar Door and Sales, and Isabella Knight, overseeing Marketing and Operations, have been instrumental in the distillery’s growth and success.

Flask & Barrel Review of Kiwi Spirit Distillery

Recently, I had the chance to check out Kiwi Spirit Distillery in Golden Bay, New Zealand, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience! As someone who’s been around the block with distillery tours, I was keen to see what New Zealand’s only tequila farm had to offer.

First off, the setting of this distillery is just stunning. Golden Bay is a real treat with its scenic beauty and laid-back vibe – it sets the perfect stage for a unique distilling experience. The farm tour was an eye-opener. Learning about agave cultivation right where it’s happening was something new for me.

The staff were super knowledgeable, and their passion for tequila-making was obvious.

The range of spirits at Kiwi Spirit is impressive. I’m more of a whiskey guy, but their tequilas caught my attention. The Silver Tequila was crisp and vibrant, and the Añejo had this amazing amber colour and smooth texture that I loved.

They even have these flavoured tequilas, which were a fun twist.

Now, for the nitty-gritty: The tour and tasting. The guide was great – friendly and full of interesting facts. I especially enjoyed the bit where we got to taste the different spirits. Each had its character, and you could tell the care that goes into making them.
