History of Mannochmore Distillery
Founded in 1971, Mannochmore Distillery is a relative newcomer to the world of Scotch whisky. Built by Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. (DCL) on the same site as its older sibling, Glenlossie Distillery, Mannochmore wasn’t established with grand tourism ambitions.
Built for Blends
Mannochmore’s initial purpose was to meet the growing international demand for blended Scotch whiskies. John Haig & Co. Ltd. took over management and for many years, Mannochmore’s spirit became a key contributor to Haig’s Blends and other popular brands like Dimple. The distillery boasted an impressive six stills, making it three times the size of Glenlossie, reflecting its focus on high-volume production.
A Bumpy Ride
Despite its initial success, Mannochmore faced a period of closure between 1985 and 1989 due to a slump in the whisky market. After reopening, the distillery entered a new chapter, venturing into the realm of single malt bottlings.
In 1992, the first official Mannochmore single malt, a 12-year-old expression, debuted as part of the Flora & Fauna range.
The Enigmatic Loch Dhu
1996 saw the release of one of Mannochmore’s most talked-about bottlings – the black Loch Dhu (“Black Loch” in Scottish Gaelic). This single malt gained notoriety for its unusually dark color, rumored to be achieved through heavy use of spirit caramel. While production of Loch Dhu ceased in 1999, it remains a sought-after collector’s item for its unique appearance and taste.
Modern Mannochmore
Mannochmore’s current operation reflects a balance between tradition and efficiency. As of 2013, the distillery operates with four stills and a dedicated team, though it still shares some resources with Glenlossie.
While Mannochmore single malts are not as widely available as some other brands, they are appreciated for their light, floral character with hints of honey and pear.
The distillery continues to be owned by Diageo, one of the world’s largest drinks companies. While not as flashy as some historic distilleries, Mannochmore plays a vital role in the Scotch whisky industry, offering a unique single malt alongside its contributions to well-known blends.
