Nc'nean Distillery

History of Nc’nean Distillery

The story of Nc’nean Distillery begins in 2012 with Annabel Thomas. Inspired by the wild beauty of the Scottish west coast, where she spent her childhood summers, Annabel envisioned a distillery unlike any other.

Her dream was to create a single malt whisky that existed in harmony with the environment, on land her parents had purchased a decade earlier.

Nc’nean, named after the Gaelic ghost queen Neachneohain (pronounced ‘Nook-knee-anne’), would become Scotland’s first organic whisky distillery. However, the journey from dream to reality wasn’t easy. Annabel, with no prior experience running a distillery, left her London consultancy job and spent the next four years meticulously planning and securing funding.

This funding came from a mix of sources, including family, friends, loans, seed investors, and a significant grant from the EU via the Scottish Government.

Sustainable Practices and Award-Winning Results (2017-Present)

Finally, in March 2017, Nc’nean began distilling its first batches of organic whisky. Situated on the remote Drimnin Estate on the Morvern Peninsula, the distillery itself was designed with sustainability in mind.

Chemicals are avoided wherever possible, with natural solutions used for cleaning and processes. Waste heat is even captured and reused throughout the distillery.

Nc’nean’s commitment to organic principles extends to their barley, which is sourced from local Scottish farms certified organic. This not only ensures a high-quality product but also supports sustainable agricultural practices.

While Nc’nean is still a young distillery, their dedication to quality and innovation has already garnered recognition. Their core expression, Nc’nean Organic Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is known for its clean, fruity character with a hint of spice.

They also offer a unique botanical spirit, an unaged whisky infused with botanicals, and have recently begun releasing limited-edition single cask bottlings.

Looking Ahead: A Future Steeped in Tradition and Innovation

Nc’nean Distillery continues to push boundaries. With a focus on experimentation and small-batch production, they are constantly exploring new ways to create exceptional organic whisky. As they age their own whisky for longer periods, the future promises even more exciting releases. Nc’nean stands as a testament to the power of vision, sustainability, and a deep respect for the land.

Flask & Barrel Review of Nc’nean Distillery

I’ve been on my fair share of distillery tours, but Nc’nean on Scotland’s west coast? That was something special. This isn’t your typical big-name operation. Nc’nean’s all about small-batch, organic whisky made with a serious focus on sustainability.

The Tour: Eco-Conscious and Informative

The tour itself was fantastic. The guide was super knowledgeable and passionate, which is always a win. They really take you through the whole process, from the organic barley they source locally to the innovative ways they minimize their environmental impact. It’s cool to see a distillery that’s so dedicated to doing things right for the planet.

Whiskey with a Conscience

Now, onto the main event: the whiskey. I did the full tour, which of course meant a tasting at the end. Let me tell you, the Nc’nean stuff is delicious. It’s young, sure, since they haven’t been around forever, but it’s got this really clean, fruity taste with a touch of spice. It’s easy to drink and perfect for savoring. You can tell the quality ingredients and care that goes into making it.

A Distillery on the Rise

Now, a heads up – since they’re new, they haven’t had a chance to age their own whisky for a super long time yet. Most of what they use is sourced. But here’s the thing: they’re blending and finishing it like nobody’s business. It doesn’t taste young or harsh at all. In fact, it’s smooth and really well-balanced.

Overall, Nc’nean Distillery is a total gem. They’re doing something unique and doing it well. The tour was informative and engaging, and the whiskey is seriously good. If you’re looking for a distillery that’s pushing the boundaries and making a delicious, sustainable product, Nc’nean is a must-visit. You won’t be disappointed.
