History of Rogue Spirits Distillery

Founding and Philosophy

Rogue Spirits Distillery, part of the larger Rogue Ales & Spirits, was founded in 1988 by Jack Joyce, Bob Woodell, Rob Strasser, and Jeff Schultz.

The distillery is rooted in Newport, Oregon, a location chosen by founder Jack Joyce after an unexpected snowstorm led him to meet Mohava Niemi, aka “Mo” of Mo’s Restaurants.

The distillery’s philosophy is encapsulated in its mantra: “Dare. Risk. Dream.” This reflects their commitment to daring innovation, taking calculated risks, and dreaming beyond conventional boundaries.

Growth and Expansion

Originally starting as a brewery, Rogue quickly expanded its operations to include distilling in 2003, becoming one of America’s first independent craft distilleries.

The distillery’s growth is marked by significant milestones, such as the opening of the Rolling Thunder Barrel Works in 2014, where they began coopering their own barrels. Rogue’s dedication to craftsmanship and quality has led it to become a globally recognized beverage brand, with products available in all 50 states and over 50 countries.

Unique Contributions and Awards

Rogue stands out as the only brewery-distillery-cooperage in the country. The distillery has had only two Brewmasters: John Maier, who retired in 2019, and Joel Shields.

Rogue’s commitment to excellence is evident in its impressive canning line, which runs at 235 cans per minute, and the distillery’s collection of more than 2,000 awards for taste, quality, and packaging.

Awards Won by Rogue Spirits Distillery

  • Rolling Thunder Stouted Whiskey: This exceptional whiskey has secured the Double Gold for the second time in three years, underlining its consistent quality and craftsmanship. It’s an American Single Malt whiskey, distinct for its aging process in oak barrels and its unique finishing in barrels that previously aged Rogue’s Rolling Thunder Imperial Stout. This intricate process contributes to its spice, citrus tones, and deep, dark stout flavors. With only 700 cases produced annually, it’s a highly sought-after and limited product.
  • Dead Guy Whiskey and Farmhouse Gin: Both spirits were awarded silver medals at the competition, showcasing Rogue’s versatile expertise in crafting a variety of high-quality spirits.

Flask & Barrel Review of Rogue Spirits Distillery

Rogue Spirits Distillery totally nailed it, and I’ve seen my fair share of distilleries! Tucked away in Newport, the place is a real feast for the eyes with those killer views of Yaquina Bay.

As a whiskey aficionado, I was stoked to try their Rolling Thunder Stouted Whiskey – talk about a flavor explosion! It’s got this unique depth, probably from those stout-soaked barrels. And let me tell you, it’s not just hype – this whiskey is an award-winner for a reason.

The tour itself was super chill, the guide knew their stuff, and you could really feel the craft in every detail. They’ve got this cozy vibe with a solid selection of spirits and some tasty bites to boot.

If I had to nitpick, I’d say I wished the tour dove a bit deeper into the nitty-gritty of their distilling magic. But hey, at a 4.7 out of 5, Rogue Spirits is absolutely a must-visit for anyone who appreciates a well-crafted drink with a view to match. Cheers to that!
