History of Rosebank Distillery

Beginnings and Expansion

The Rosebank Distillery boasts a rich history that commenced in 1840 when James Rankine, a local wine merchant, acquired the maltings of the Camelon Distillery.

Situated on the opposite bank of the canal from the main distillery, these maltings marked the beginning of Rosebank’s story on its current site. James Rankine was instrumental in expanding the distillery in 1845, a legacy that was later carried on by his son, R.W. Rankine.

Under their stewardship, Rosebank’s whisky quickly became a favorite among blenders, earning the title of ‘top dressing’ due to its high demand and quality.

A Distinctive Production Technique

Rosebank Distillery was not just known for its whisky but also for its unique production methods. The distillery was renowned for its light, floral Scotch whiskies, a stark contrast to the heavy industrial backdrop of Scotland’s Central Belt where it was located.

This juxtaposition was further mirrored in its production techniques, which combined worm tub condensers with triple distillation.

This method resulted in a distinctive light/full flavor contrast, setting Rosebank’s Lowland single malt Scotch whisky apart as a category-defining product.

Challenges and Closure

Despite its success, Rosebank faced turbulent times, especially in the 1990s when global whisky sales declined. The distillery eventually closed its doors in 1993.

The then-owner, UDV (now Diageo), mothballed the site due to the high costs of upgrading its effluent treatment plant and issues related to road access.

In a further blow to its legacy, the original stills and mash tun were stolen during the 2008/09 Christmas and New Year holiday.

Revival and Future

The story of Rosebank, however, did not end with its closure. In 2017, Ian Macleod Distillers saw the potential in the crumbling infrastructure of the distillery and took on the mission to revive it.

Their efforts went beyond mere restoration; they aimed to rejuvenate the entire community surrounding the distillery. Rosebank was more than a distillery; it was a symbol of local pride, contributing significantly to the local economy and culture.

The revival efforts are not just about bringing back exceptional whisky but also about restoring the heartbeat of Falkirk, bringing tourism, employment, and the beloved aroma of whisky distillation back to the town.

A New Chapter

For whisky enthusiasts, the closure of Rosebank in 1993 was a significant loss, symbolizing the decline of the Lowlands as a prominent whisky region.

However, the revival efforts by Ian Macleod Distillers have reignited hope. The commitment to restoring every detail of the old production process promises a new chapter in the history of Rosebank, ensuring that the legacy of ‘The King of the Lowlands’ continues to thrive.

Awards Won by Rosebank Distillery

  • Rosebank 30 Year Old: This whisky is the first global release from the revived distillery and marks a new chapter in its legacy. A hand-selected vintage from 1990, it was launched as the first expression in a series of annual limited edition releases. The whisky matured in a combination of refill Sherry butts and refill Bourbon hogsheads, resulting in a non-chill-filtered bottling with layers of incredible flavor. Priced at £1,600 (US$2,100), only 4,350 bottles are available worldwide. This release is significant as it precedes the distillery’s planned reopening, which is expected to create new jobs and attract visitors to Falkirk.
  • Rosebank 31 Year Old: Following the 30-year-old release, the distillery introduced its 31-year-old single malt to the US. Bottled at 48.1% ABV, this whisky comes from casks salvaged prior to the distillery’s closure in 1993. Priced at US$3,299 for a 700 ml bottle, it’s the second release from Ian Macleod Distillers since acquiring the distillery and its remaining stocks. The 31-year-old release is notable as it represents the last “old Rosebank” release before the distillery reopens to the public. It’s characterized by a fruity and floral profile, achieved through triple distillation and worm tub condensers.

Flask & Barrel Review of Rosebank Distillery

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Rosebank Distillery, and let me tell you, it was an experience that nearly topped them all. As a whiskey collector, I’ve been on my fair share of distillery tours, but Rosebank has something special going on.

First off, the restoration of the distillery is nothing short of impressive. Walking into the place, you can feel the history seeping through the walls. The blend of the ancient with the modern is seamless.

Those gleaming copper stills they’ve got are not just for show – they’re a testament to the craftsmanship and care that goes into every bottle of Rosebank.

The tour itself was top-notch. It’s one thing to taste a whiskey, but to witness the meticulous process of how it’s made, right from the source, adds a whole new layer of appreciation.

And speaking of tasting, the session in their tasting room was an absolute treat. Each sip of their whiskey was like a journey through time – complex, rich, and utterly satisfying.

The only reason I’m holding back on a perfect score is that, as a collector, I’m always looking for that little bit of extra exclusivity. While the opportunity to take home a bottle of their exclusive whiskey was fantastic, I was left craving just a bit more in terms of rare or limited edition offerings.

All in all, giving Rosebank a 4.7 out of 5 feels just about right. It’s a place where the passion for whiskey is palpable, and the dedication to preserving tradition while embracing the future is clear in every detail.

If you’re a whiskey enthusiast, Rosebank Distillery is a must-visit. Trust me, it’s an experience that you won’t forget anytime soon.
