History of Sasanokawa Shuzo Distillery
Sasanokawa Shuzo Distillery was founded in 1765 in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Established by the Sasanokawa family, the distillery initially focused on producing sake, a traditional Japanese rice wine. Over the years, the distillery expanded its product line to include other traditional Japanese beverages such as shochu.
Expansion into Whisky Production
In 1946, following World War II, Sasanokawa Shuzo made a significant expansion into whisky production. This move was influenced by the increasing popularity of whisky in Japan during that period. The distillery began producing a range of whiskies, leveraging its expertise in distillation and fermentation processes honed over centuries of sake production.
Collaboration and Innovation
Sasanokawa Shuzo has been involved in various collaborations that have helped enhance its reputation in the whisky industry. Notably, the distillery played a crucial role in the early success of Ichiro’s Malt, a well-known Japanese whisky brand. When the Hanyu Distillery closed in 2004, Sasanokawa Shuzo helped bottle some of the initial releases of Ichiro’s Malt, showcasing its commitment to quality and innovation in whisky production.
