Starlaw Distillery isn’t your typical, steeped-in-history Scotch whisky producer. Established in 2010, it’s a relative newcomer to the scene, but it plays a significant role in the industry as a major supplier of grain whisky.
French Beginnings in Scotch Country (1969 – Present)
The story behind Starlaw Distillery can be traced back to La Martiniquaise, a French drinks group. In 1969, they entered the Scotch whisky market by launching Label 5, a blended Scotch whisky brand that has become a major player worldwide.
Building a Blending Empire (2004 – Present):
La Martiniquaise recognized the need for a dedicated production facility for their blends. In 2004, they established the First Blending Company in Bathgate, Scotland, a massive site for maturation, blending, and bottling operations. This move further solidified their commitment to the Scotch whisky industry.
Birth of a Grain Giant (2010 – Present)
The opening of Starlaw Distillery in 2010 marked a significant milestone for La Martiniquaise. It became Scotland’s first purpose-built grain distillery in over 40 years.

Beyond Blends: While Starlaw’s primary focus is on grain whisky for blends, they also produce a single grain Scotch whisky under their own name – Starlaw Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky.
