History of Torabhaig Distillery

The story of Torabhaig starts with Sir Iain Noble, a visionary who purchased land on Skye in 1972. He dreamt of reviving a 19th-century farm steading at Torabhaig and transforming it into a distillery. Sadly, Sir Noble passed away in 2010 before his plans could come to fruition.

However, fate intervened. Mossburn Distillers, seeking a site on Skye, discovered the abandoned Torabhaig project. Recognizing the potential of the historic steading, they acquired the project in 2013. After extensive renovations that took three years, Torabhaig Distillery finally opened its doors in 2017.

Building on Tradition: The Distillery’s Design and Production

The Torabhaig Distillery seamlessly blends the past with the present. The architects, Simpson and Brown, meticulously restored the 19th-century steading, incorporating a unique removable roof for future still maintenance. Inside, the distillery employs traditional methods, featuring wooden washbacks and two copper pot stills.

This combination allows for a more hands-on approach and contributes to the unique character of the whisky.

With a production capacity of 500,000 liters per year, Torabhaig focuses on crafting single malt Scotch whisky. While their first releases are still young, the distillery promises future expressions that will capture the essence of Skye.

A Legacy in the Making: The Future of Torabhag Distillery

Torabhaig Distillery is a young enterprise with a long-term vision. Their commitment to traditional methods and the unique terroir of Skye suggests exciting possibilities for the future. Their first release, the “Legacy Series 2017,” marked a significant milestone, and future expressions are eagerly awaited by whisky enthusiasts.

In addition to producing exceptional whisky, Torabhaig embraces its heritage. The distillery operates a visitor center, offering tours and insights into the whisky-making process. With its mascot, a baby goat named “Goaty,” Torabhaig adds a touch of whimsy to its dedication to quality and tradition.

As Torabhaig continues to mature its whisky and refine its methods, it is poised to become a prominent voice in the world of single malt Scotch whisky, carrying on the legacy of Skye’s rich distilling tradition.

Flask & Barrel Review of Torabhaig Distillery

As a seasoned distillery tourist, I’ve wandered through my fair share of copper cauldrons and nosing rooms. But let me tell you, the Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye managed to impress this jaded whisky collector. Here’s why I’d give it a near-perfect 4.7 out of 5 stars.

New Kid on the Block with Old-School Charm

First off, Torabhaig isn’t your granddaddy’s distillery. Established in 2017, it’s a fresh face on the scene. However, they haven’t forgotten the importance of tradition. The restored 19th-century steading they call home is a testament to that. It’s a cool blend of old-world vibes and modern functionality – think exposed beams meeting gleaming stainless steel.

A Peek Behind the Curtain (and the Removable Roof!)

The tour itself was a real treat. Our guide, clearly passionate about the craft, walked us through the entire process, from the malting (which they don’t do on-site) to the maturation in casks. Bonus points for the surprising detail – the distillery roof is actually removable, allowing for easy maintenance of those towering copper stills!

Whisky for the Future, Made with Time-Tested Methods

Now, what truly excites a whisky geek like myself is the future potential here. Torabhaig uses traditional methods like wooden washbacks and pot stills, which contribute to a unique character in their spirit. While their initial releases are understandably young, you can taste the promise of something truly special waiting to emerge in the coming years.

A Touch of Whimsy and a Warm Welcome

It’s not all serious business at Torabhaig, though. Their mascot, a cheeky little goat named “Goaty,” adds a touch of lightheartedness to the experience. Plus, the staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, making the whole visit feel relaxed and enjoyable.
