A’bunadh, produced by the Aberlour Distillery in Scotland, is a robust and full-bodied single malt whisky bottled at cask strength. While it lacks an age statement, it is released in limited batches, each distinguished by a unique number on its label. The whisky is meticulously crafted by blending barrels aged between 5 and 25 years.
A’bunadh stands apart with its distinctive maturation process, as it is exclusively aged in Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts. This aging imparts a sweeter and smoother flavor profile compared to traditional Scotch whiskies. Notably, A’bunadh is never subjected to chill filtration.
In 1975, when the distillery installed a second pair of stills, a time capsule was discovered concealed behind the name plate. This capsule contained a newspaper from 1898 detailing a distillery fire, wrapped around a bottle of Aberlour from the same year.
Curiously, the workers who found the bottle consumed a significant portion of its contents during their lunch break. However, the remaining liquid was sent to the laboratories in Keith for analysis. A’bunadh represents an endeavor to recreate the essence of this historic single malt.
The name A’bunadh can be loosely translated from Scottish Gaelic to English as “the Origin.” Among the batches, Batch 21 is particularly coveted by enthusiasts.
It is available in a 70cl bottle, boasting a potent 59.5% alcohol by volume.
