Amrut Greedy Angels is a remarkable Indian Single Malt Whisky that was first introduced to the world in Glasgow, Scotland, on 24 August 2004. The distillery itself has a rich history, having been founded in 1948 by JN Rao Jagdale. It is currently operated by the third generation of the Jagdale family.
The whisky is produced from 100% unpeated Indian 6-row barley, sourced from the Northern States of Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. This results in a slightly sweeter taste profile compared to the 2-row barley commonly used in Scotland. The whisky is aged in ex-bourbon barrels purchased from renowned distilleries like Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace, and Jack Daniels.
What sets this whisky apart is the unique climate of Bangalore, India, where it is aged. The city is situated at an altitude of 3000 feet above sea level and experiences a constant climate temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Research has shown that whisky aged in Bangalore ages approximately 3.5 times faster than whisky aged in Scotland. This is attributed to the unique climatic conditions, which impart a distinct character to the whisky.
The Greedy Angels range is non-chill filtered, which means that it retains more of its natural flavours and characteristics. The palate offers a blend of honey and tropical fruits, complemented by chocolaty coconuts and vanilla pods.
The finish is mouthwatering at first, then drying, with layers of spice, woody notes, and chocolate-covered roasted almonds.
Amrut Distilleries have won over 50 international awards, both for the distillery and its range of Single Malt Whiskies and Rums. The company places a strong emphasis on maintaining jobs, particularly for women, who are key income earners in their families.
“Amrut” is a Sanskrit word that translates to “Elixir of Life,” and this whisky certainly lives up to its name, offering a unique and enriching experience for connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike.
