The Amrut PX Sherry Single Cask 3516 whisky is a special expression from the esteemed Amrut Distilleries, located in Bangalore, India. This distillery has been operational since 1948 and is known for its innovative and high-quality whiskies.
Maturation and Ageing:
The whisky was aged in a PX Sherry cask, known as cask 3516, for just under four years. It was bottled in July 2014, making it a relatively young whisky, especially considering it was entered into the cask in August 2010.
Tasting Notes:
The nose is very sweet, featuring honey, golden brown sugar, sultanas, and golden raisins. There are also notes of apple and plums, more stewed than fresh. The palate is an interesting mix of sweet and bitter, with brown sugar and caramel initially, turning more to vanilla and liquefied white sugar over time. Chocolate and tons of pepper add complexity, along with anise and a fragrant herbal component reminiscent of Ricola cough candies.
Appearance:
The whisky has a medium gold, light brown colour, which adds a layer of visual appeal.
Strength and Complexity:
Bottled at a robust 62.8% ABV, this whisky is not for the faint-hearted. Despite its high alcohol content, it has a surprising lack of ethanol fumes, making it more approachable than one might expect.
Comparison with Other Amrut Offerings:
This expression is fresher and more vibrant compared to other cask-strength Amruts. The finish is balanced and integrated, resembling spiced rum, which sets it apart from other offerings in the Amrut range.
