Amrut Spectrum 004 is a fascinating Indian single malt whisky that has captivated connoisseurs with its unique maturation process. The journey of this whisky began in 2004 when Neelakanta Rao Jagdale sent his son to Glasgow to formally launch Amrut as a single malt. Over the years, the distillery has gained prominence, especially after being named the third-best whisky in the world in 2010 by Jim Murray.
The whisky initially matures in ex-bourbon casks but is then transferred to specially crafted ‘Frankenbarrels.’ These barrels are made from staves collected from four different types of casks: new American oak (char level 3), new French oak (lightly toasted), ex-Oloroso sherry butts, and ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry butts. This unique approach to maturation results in a whisky with a complex flavour profile.
When it comes to tasting notes, Amrut Spectrum 004 is intense yet balanced. The nose offers strong coffee, treacle, tobacco, and orange marmalade, accompanied by brown sugar and a hint of soy and hoisin. The taste reveals soft oak spices, burnt toast, some resin, and dark chocolate. Water brings out additional notes of mint, coffee grounds, and tobacco. The finish is long, featuring molasses, spices, nougat, and a whisper of bitter chocolate.
Amrut Spectrum 004 is not just another whisky; it’s a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Amrut Distilleries. It stands as a fine example in the category of Indian single malts, showcasing the effects of maturation in a hot climate and some incredibly clever whisky engineering.
