Amrut Spectrum is an Indian whisky that has captivated enthusiasts with its innovative approach to maturation. The second batch, Spectrum 004, is particularly intriguing. It matures in a hybrid cask made from four different types of wood, excluding Spanish Oak staves that were part of the first batch. This cask construction aims to impart a rich and complex flavour profile to the whisky.
When it comes to tasting notes, Spectrum 004 offers a delightful array of flavours. The nose is filled with figs, raisins, plums, and earth cherries, accompanied by chocolate notes and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is a mix of sweet sultanas and raisins, sour cherry, green apple, and lemon, making it slightly tart. Spices like anise, black pepper, and chilli pepper add a layer of complexity. The finish is long, featuring dried fruits and spices, with a bit of astringent dryness.
The whisky is a no age statement (NAS) release, but the base spirit is known to have spent 3 years in traditional ex-Bourbon oak barrels before being transferred to the custom hybrid barrel for another 3.5 years. Only 1800 bottles of this second batch were produced, making it a limited release.
In the grand scheme of Amrut whiskies, Spectrum 004 holds its own, scoring highly in a Meta-Critic Whisky Database. It stands alongside other notable Amrut releases like Fusion, Greedy Angels, and Portonova, showcasing the distillery’s commitment to quality and innovation.
