History
The establishment of Jack Daniel’s Distillery dates back to 1866, and it has the distinction of being the first registered distillery in the United States. Named after its founder, Jasper Newton Daniel, the distillery is renowned for crafting the unique taste of Old No. 7, which has won over countless whiskey enthusiasts.
By 1904, this exceptional whiskey had been awarded a gold medal at the World’s Fair. Limestone spring water, integral to Jack’s award-winning formula, is still used today at the Lynchburg, Tennessee location. The enduring original recipe, unaltered to this day, incorporates a precise blend of corn, rye, and barley.
The journey began when Jack found himself orphaned and left home, unable to accept his stepmother following his father’s remarriage. He found a new home with a local preacher, Dan Call, who began to teach him the art of distilling. In 1875, using funds inherited from his late father’s estate, Jack and Call established a registered distillery. However, Call soon withdrew from the business due to his religious convictions, leaving Jack to manage it alone.
In 1884, Jack Daniel procured the land that now houses the distillery. He remained at the helm until 1907, when he handed over the reins to his nephew, Lemuel “Lew” Motlow, due to his own unmarried and childless status. For the next 40 years, Motlow led the distillery and, in 1910, he even contested a law in the Tennessee Supreme Court when a statewide prohibition was enacted, effectively banning the legal production of Jack Daniel’s in Tennessee.
The firm shifted production to St. Louis, Missouri, and Birmingham, Alabama, in response to the prohibition, but failed to recreate the unique quality of whiskey previously distilled in Tennessee. Both Missouri and Alabama also imposed similar prohibitions, and it wasn’t until 1947, after years of legal reversals and modifications, that the distillery could resume operations.
Interestingly, while whiskey production is lawful in Tennessee, the distillery is situated in a dry county, where the sale of alcohol is prohibited.
However, there’s a single exception that permits Jack Daniel’s to sell one commemorative product. Visitors can purchase Gentleman Jack, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, or Old No. 7 from the distillery’s on-site bottle shop.
The distillery provides free guided tours daily, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exceptions of Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
Post-tour, guests are treated to a small serving of lemonade, a pleasant gesture given the prohibition of alcohol sales in this dry county.
