Methodology

The research process for this study, and the collection of drinking songs analysis we have conducted on the best drinking songs according to Spotify data consisted of the following steps:

  1. Playlist Identification: The research team created a list of over 700 queries targeting playlists with titles indicating they were “drinking” or “party” playlists. This was done through manual research to identify common playlist naming patterns and appending relevant terms related to alcohol, drinks, genres, and sub-genres.
  2. Data Collection: The Spotify Web API was used to retrieve playlists for each of the 700+ queries. This resulted in a dataset of 23,425 unique drinking/party playlists.
  3. Data Cleaning and Tagging: The playlist dataset was de-duplicated, and the research team manually reviewed the playlist names to identify any terms or phrases indicating the playlist’s genre or drinking/party focus. Each song was then tagged with the relevant genre and drinking/party playlist information.
  4. Song Analysis: The cleaned and tagged dataset contained 2,549,879 tracks from the 23,425 drinking/party playlists, which equated to 745,409 unique songs. For each song, the following data points were analyzed:
    • Overall Drinking Song Popularity: The total number of drinking/party playlists the song appeared in.
    • 2024 Drinking Song Popularity: The number of drinking/party playlists the song was added to in 2024.
    • Drinking Song Popularity by Genre: The total number of genre and sub-genre tags associated with the song, allowing for ranking by total genre tags.
    • Favorite Drinking Songs by Decade: The total number of drinking/party playlist appearances for songs released in each decade from the 1960s to the 2020s.
  5. Reporting: The research findings, including key insights, top songs, artists, genres, and drinking song trends by decade, were compiled and presented in the final report.

This in-depth playlist and song-level analysis, allowed the research team to derive meaningful insights from the Spotify playlist data to identify the best drinking songs according to user preferences.
